,Hot-Dip Galvanized Industrial Steel Grating
11-W-4 carbon steel bar grating is a welded close-mesh panel featuring bearing bars at 11/16 in. (17.5 mm) on center and cross bars at 4 in. (100 mm) on center. This configuration is ideal for industrial platforms and walkways where foot traffic, wheeled trolleys, and dropped objects must all be accommodated by the same floor surface. Platform selection typically focuses on finding the tightest mesh that can span your support spacing within budget constraints.
| Designation | Bearing Bar Spacing | Open Area (approx.) | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| 19-W-4 | 1-3/16 in. (30 mm) | ~80% | General industrial platforms, best drainage per kg |
| 15-W-4 | 15/16 in. (24 mm) | ~75% | Higher point loads, tighter heel safety |
| 11-W-4 | 11/16 in. (17.5 mm) | ~70% | Pedestrian platforms, public access, dropped-object control |
| 11-W-2 | 11/16 in. (17.5 mm) | ~70% | Same mesh with cross bars at 2 in. for extra lateral rigidity |
Rule of thumb: The tighter the mesh, the more bars carry the load and the less that falls through. Choose 11-W-4 when the platform sits over equipment, a public route, or a work area where dropped objects pose a hazard.
Bearing bars must run across the span, perpendicular to the supporting beams. Rotating a panel 90° dramatically reduces its usable span. Maintain clear span within the figures below and band every cut end.
| Bearing Bar (plain) | Indicative Clear Span, 5 kPa (100 psf) |
|---|---|
| 1 × 3/16 in. (25 × 5 mm) | ≤ 900 mm |
| 1-1/4 × 3/16 in. (32 × 5 mm) | ≤ 1,050 mm |
| 1-1/2 × 3/16 in. (40 × 5 mm) | ≤ 1,200 mm |
| 2 × 3/16 in. (50 × 5 mm) | ≤ 1,500 mm |
Figures are conservative planning values at L/200 deflection per ANSI/NAAMM MBG 531 practice. Request our load table for your exact span, load case, and deflection limit.
| Traffic | Typical Design Load | Grating Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Pedestrian only | 4 - 5 kPa (80 - 100 psf) | 11-W-4, 1 in. × 3/16 in. bar |
| Pedestrian + hand trolley | 5 kPa + 4.5 kN point load | 11-W-4, 1-1/4 in. × 3/16 in. bar |
| Pallet truck, occasional | 10 kPa + wheel load | 19-W-4 heavy duty, 1/4 in. bar |
| Forklift / vehicle | Per wheel load | Heavy duty press-locked or 1/4 in. welded |
11-W-4 is a light duty pedestrian panel. Any application involving hard wheels requires a heavier designation and a bearing bar thickness quoted separately.
- Bearing bar direction: Always perpendicular to the support beams; verify before unloading.
- Clips: Four per panel minimum (two per end), using galvanized or stainless steel saddle clips into the supporting steel.
- Gaps: Maintain consistent panel-to-panel and panel-to-wall gaps; close mesh hides small misalignments less effectively than 19-W-4.
- Cut-outs: Band all cut edges and around penetrations to restore load path—unbanded cut-outs commonly cause "soft" corners.
- Touch-up: Grind and cold-galvanize any site-cut edge to maintain continuous ASTM A123 coating.
