  • Weldability. Both are low-carbon steels with carbon equivalents around 0.30–0.35 for bar thicknesses; grating cross bars are resistance-welded without preheat in both cases.

Where They Differ

  1. Purity limits. S235JR caps phosphorus and sulfur at 0.035% each, tighter than Q235B's 0.045%. Modern Q235B production routinely meets 0.030–0.040% in practice, but the guaranteed limit is the standard's, and that is what a certificate states.
  2. Carbon cap. S235JR limits carbon to 0.17% up to 40 mm thickness versus 0.20% for Q235B — negligible for properties, visible on the chemistry report.
  3. Certification and CE marking. This is the biggest real-world difference. European structural projects under the Construction Products Regulation call up EN 10025 material plus EN 1090 execution and CE marking of the fabricated product. A Chinese grating maker supplying Q235B can provide an EN 10204 3.1 mill certificate, but the panel itself is not automatically CE-marked unless the factory holds the EN 1090 execution certification — a commercial decision, not a metallurgical one.
  4. Availability and price. Q235B is produced by every Chinese mill in grating bar sizes at low cost and short lead time; S235JR-branded bars must be ordered as a certified EN grade, which adds a premium and lead time in China.
