Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel Grating Trench Covers and Drainage Grates
Galvanized steel grating is the standard material for trench covers, drainage grates and floor drains in industrial plants, public roads, parking decks, ports and food-processing facilities. Its open area drains water, oil and debris almost as fast as they arrive, the galvanized coating handles wet and mildly corrosive environments for decades, and individual panels can be lifted by two workers for routine cleaning.
Why Galvanized Steel Grating for Trench Covers
A trench cover has three jobs at the same time: carry the load, drain the trench, resist corrosion. Galvanized steel grating does all three in one panel:
- Load: welded bearing bars carry pedestrian, forklift and slow-wheel traffic per EN 124 load classes A 15 to D 400, or per NAAMM MBG 531 for industrial floors.
- Drainage: 50-70% open area passes water, oil and chips quickly.
- Corrosion: the hot-dip zinc coating per ASTM A123 / ISO 1461 (≥ 85 µm) lasts 20-40+ years in C2-C4 atmospheres and remains serviceable in C5-M with the heavier coating classes we offer.
The panel is light (≈ 25-45 kg/m² depending on bar size) and modular — single panels can be lifted and replaced without breaking out adjacent concrete.
Load Class and Bearing Bar Selection
Match the bearing bar to the heaviest vehicle that will cross the cover. As a rule of thumb:

For class C and above, specify load bars across the trench (perpendicular to the trench length) and provide a continuous angle frame welded into the surrounding concrete to transfer load to the structure.
Tip for procurement: when the trench is wider than 600 mm, add a centre support strip or specify a heavier bar. L/200 deflection is the typical design limit for pedestrian and vehicle covers.

For road and port applications we deliver covers in EN 124 D 400 frames cast into the concrete kerb, with bolt-down grating panels to deter theft and simplify maintenance.
Surface and Anti-Slip Options
For pedestrian and wet-area covers we recommend the serrated surface for additional slip resistance. Tighter mesh (30 × 100 mm instead of 40 × 100) prevents high-heeled shoes, tools and small wheels from falling through the grating. For food and beverage plants with hot wash-down, specify 40 × 100 serrated + HDG + optional epoxy topcoat to extend life in high humidity.
Installation Details That Matter
The right installation makes a 20-year cover — the wrong one cuts life in half.
- Embed the angle frame in concrete. Weld the frame anchor lugs to rebar at 300-400 mm centres, and pour concrete flush with the top of the frame. The grating panel must sit on the bearing flat of the frame, not on the surrounding concrete — otherwise traffic loads the concrete edge and spalls.
- Use welded banding on all four sides of the cover panel to keep the panel square when lifted and to spread wheel loads into adjacent bars.
- Bolt the panel down in theft-prone or public areas. We supply M-clip saddle clips or bolt-down kits in matched quantities.
- Seal where hygiene matters. In food and pharmaceutical trenches, weld a stainless sealing angle to the grating edge and seal the joint with food-grade silicone.
- Re-zinc the cut edges. When the panel is cut to length on site, the cut edge becomes a corrosion hotspot. Spray the cut edge liberally with zinc-rich repair paint (≥ 95% Zn in dry film) within 30 minutes of cutting. If you prefer factory-cut panels, we will deliver cut-to-size covers with all edges re-galvanized.
