Galvanized steel stair treads are the standard tread for industrial stairs, escape stairs, tank ladders and outdoor fire stairs because they are tough, slip-resistant and survive outdoor and wash-down environments for decades without repainting.
What a Galvanized Steel Stair Tread Is
A galvanized stair tread is a single panel of galvanized steel grating cut to stair-tread shape, normally with banded ends and a nosing bar at the front edge. The grating panel is hot-dip galvanized after fabrication per ASTM A123 / ISO 1461, giving the same 20-50+ year service life as our platform grating.

Verify Before You Specify
If your stair is in a regulated facility -- public building, oil & gas, food plant -- confirm these directly:
- OSHA 1910.29(b) -- stairs must support a 1.5 kN concentrated load at the nosing and 1.0 kPa UDL elsewhere.
- EN ISO 14122-3 -- industrial stair geometry, load 1.5 kN concentrated / 2.0 kN/m² UDL on the tread.
- AS 1657 -- Australian fixed-platform, walkway and stair code.

Nosing Options -- and Why the Nosing Matters
The nosing is what your foot actually hits first on every step, so it controls both slip safety and visibility. We supply three factory-built options:
Checker-Plate Nosing
A 3-5 mm hot-rolled checker plate welded to the front bearing bar. The raised pattern gives reliable grip, the plate covers the cut end of the bearing bars and gives the tread a hard leading edge that resists damage. Standard for industrial stairs and most public applications.
Abrasive Strip Nosing
A silicon-carbide or aluminum-oxide abrasive strip cast into a profiled aluminum or PVC carrier, mechanically fixed or bonded to the nosing. Highest slip resistance even when oily. Specified for offshore, marine and chemical plants.
All-Serrated Tread
The whole top of the bearing bars is serrated -- the most economical anti-slip option for outdoor and wash-down stairs. Slightly reduced section (≈ 5 %) versus a plain bar, but adequate for typical industrial loads because we adjust the recommended bearing bar by one step up.
End Configurations and Carrier Bolts
Treads are usually bolted to the stringer with end plates and M12 / M16 carrier bolts, so the tread can be lifted out individually. Specify one of the standard end shapes:
- Open end (no banding, bolt holes drilled in side bar) -- the lowest-cost, lightest-weight option.
- Band-end with end plate -- the standard industrial option. A flat bar is welded to the end of the panel, and a same-size plate is welded on top with two bolt holes for the carrier bolt. The bolt is hidden under the nosing for a clean visual.
- Clip-lock end -- special profile for stair tread clip-on systems that allow tool-free removal for cleaning.
For outdoor escape stairs we also supply a kick plate (toe board) welded to the back of each tread, 100 mm high per OSHA 1910.29(k).
