19-W-4 welded steel grating is the standard North American welded bar grating pattern: bearing bars at 19/16 in (30.2 mm) centres, cross bars at 4 in (101.6 mm) centres, electro-forged at every intersection. It is the default specification for industrial platforms, walkways and catwalks because it balances strength, open area and cost better than any other mesh.
GNEE STEEL builds 19-W-4 and its metric equivalent to ANSI/NAAMM MBG 531-17 and quotes the bar size with every panel, not the pattern alone.
| Code | Bearing bar pitch | Cross bar pitch | Where it is used |
|---|---|---|---|
| 19-W-4 | 1-3/16 in (30.2 mm) | 4 in (101.6 mm) | Standard industrial flooring, walkways |
| 19-W-2 | 1-3/16 in (30.2 mm) | 2 in (50.8 mm) | Stiffer panel, smaller openings across the span |
| 15-W-4 | 15/16 in (23.8 mm) | 4 in (101.6 mm) | Heavier pedestrian duty, tighter slot |
| 11-W-4 | 11/16 in (17.5 mm) | 4 in (101.6 mm) | Close mesh: heels, small parts, public access |
The first number counts sixteenths of an inch, so 19/16 in is 1-3/16 in — not 1-3/4 in, a misreading that still turns up on drawings. W means the bearing bars are resistance forged to the cross bars with no filler metal; the alternatives are P (press-locked), S (swage-locked) and R (riveted). The last number is the cross bar pitch in inches.
At 1-3/16 in there are 10.1 bearing bars in every foot of width, and open area comes straight from the arithmetic: % open = (1 − bar thickness ÷ 1.1875) × (1 − cross bar size ÷ 4) × 100.
| Bearing bar thickness | Open area, 19-W-4 |
|---|---|
| 1/8 in | about 84% |
| 3/16 in | about 79% |
| 1/4 in | about 74% |
The same bar drains less on a tighter pitch: with a 3/16 in bar, 19-W-4 gives about 79% open area, 15-W-4 about 75% and 11-W-4 about 68%. High open area is why the mesh sheds water, passes daylight and lets sprinkler discharge reach the level below. It also means a 1-3/16 in slot drops small parts and is not heel-proof; where either matters, specify 11-W-4 or a close-mesh panel.
| Bearing bar (depth × thickness) | lb/ft² | kg/m² |
|---|---|---|
| 1 × 1/8 in | 5.2 | 25.1 |
| 1 × 3/16 in | 7.4 | 35.9 |
| 1-1/4 × 3/16 in | 9.0 | 44.1 |
| 1-1/2 × 3/16 in | 10.9 | 53.4 |
Weights are nominal, black, and exclude zinc. Cross bars at 2 in instead of 4 in add about 0.6 lb/ft²; allow roughly 5% more once the panel is galvanized, and quote freight and lifting on the galvanized weight. A 3 ft × 24 ft sheet in 1-1/4 × 3/16 in weighs about 295 kg, so plan mechanical handling on site.
Published safe-load tables for welded grating are usually built on an allowable fibre stress of 18,000 psi (about 124 MPa), with a pedestrian comfort limit of L/240 deflection or 1/4 in, whichever governs. On that basis a 19-W-4 panel with 1-1/4 × 3/16 in bars works out at roughly 400 psf safe uniform load over a 4 ft clear span.
Treat that as indicative planning, not a design value. Real selection depends on the clear span, the load type — uniform load or a wheel at midspan — the deflection limit your engineer sets, and the steel grade, whether ASTM A36, Q235B or S275JR. Serrated bars lose section at the top edge, and the standard correction is to step up one bar depth. Send us the span and the load and we will return the calculated capacity with the load table rather than a rule of thumb.
Very nearly: 30.2 mm against 30.0 mm bearing bar pitch, 101.6 mm against 100 mm cross bar pitch. Most projects accept either, but name the one you intend.
Not in light bars. Vehicle duty needs 1/4 in or thicker bearing bars and is checked against wheel load and contact area rather than a uniform load figure.
Smooth for dry indoor platforms. Serrated for outdoor, wet, oily or marine routes, and budget one bar size deeper to recover the section the notches remove.
Standard widths are 2 ft and 3 ft with lengths up to 24 ft. Metric panels to 1000 × 6000 mm and cut-to-size panels are produced to drawing, banded and galvanized in one run.
