Product Description
11-W-4 Serrated Steel Grating Anti-Slip Close-Mesh Panels for Walkways
11-W-4 serrated steel grating is a welded close-mesh floor panel with bearing bars at 11/16 in. (17.5 mm) on centre and cross bars at 4 in. (100 mm) on centre. Teeth are cut or pressed into the top edge of every bearing bar before welding, then the panel is hot-dip galvanized after fabrication. The serration provides slip-resistant walking surfaces for wet, oily and wash-down areas without changing the mesh, span or fixing method.
What Serrated Grating Actually Changes
Teeth are formed on the bearing bar before welding, not machined afterwards, so the galvanized coating covers every exposed face.
| Feature | Typical Value |
|---|---|
| Tooth pitch | 3-6 mm |
| Tooth depth | About 1.5-2 mm |
| Where teeth sit | Top edge of every bearing bar, full panel length |
| Forming stage | Before resistance welding and before galvanizing |
Because the teeth are integral to the bar, there is nothing to debond or wear off, and the panel maintains the same load path as a plain 11-W-4 panel of identical bar size.

Important Design Consideration
Teeth remove metal from the top of the bar. When converting from plain to serrated at the same bar depth, section modulus drops and the usable span shrinks. The normal fix is to specify the bearing bar about 1/4 in. deeper on serrated panels to maintain the same span and deflection. If your drawing carries a plain-bar size straight onto a serrated panel, request span verification before production.
Compliance and Specification Points
- Slip resistance: Serrated bar is standard for water, oil or condensate environments; BS 4592 is the usual reference for slip resistance of industrial flooring.
- Dropped objects: EN ISO 14122-2 limits openings on walking surfaces; 11-W-4 at 17.5 mm spacing is chosen partly for this reason.
- Accessible routes: Where walkways must meet accessibility rules with maximum opening of about 13 mm, 11-W-4 at 17.5 mm exceeds the limit. Specify accessible routes for closer mesh or checker-plate alternatives.
- Fixing and gaps: Bearing bars run across the span; band every cut end and use at least four saddle clips per panel.
Typical Applications
Offshore and coastal walkways, rooftop service platforms exposed to rain, food and beverage plants with wash-down routines, wastewater treatment walkways, cooling tower decks, and stair treads on pedestrian routes. Anywhere plain bar would be safe when dry and questionable when wet is a serrated application.
Cost Considerations
Serrating adds roughly 8-15% to panel cost compared with plain bar of the same size, and the deeper bar often specified adds some weight. On platforms that are wet for meaningful periods, this premium is far smaller than one slip incident. Where walkways stay dry and indoors, plain 11-W-4 remains the cheaper, equally safe choice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is serrated 11-W-4 harder to walk on with a trolley?
Hand trolleys roll fine on 11-W-4 serrated; hard-wheel pallet trucks and forklifts need a heavier designation, not a serrated light-duty panel.
Does serrating reduce load capacity?
Yes, slightly, because teeth remove metal from the bar top. Specify a bar about 1/4 in. deeper to restore the original span.
Can serrated panels be cut on site?
Yes, but cut ends must be banded and the exposed steel touched up with zinc-rich paint, since galvanizing happens before cutting.
Is stainless serrated 11-W-4 available?
Yes, in 304 and 316 for food, chemical and marine environments.
Serrated 11-W-4 panels are produced to your drawing, banded on all cut ends, hot-dip galvanized and packed for container loading. Send your span, load and surface condition requirements for a quotation of the right bar size.
